In April 2018, Gavin was appointed as Chief Executive of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) with the aim of raising the profile of the Association, increasing its membership and influence across the industry and government to help improve construction standards to create better buildings, safer and healthier communities, and improved environmental and economic impacts of the built environment.
Originally trained as an Architect, Gavin initially practiced in North America with a large construction engineering consultancy before returning to the UK to specialise in the energy and environmental performance of buildings in 1998.
Gavin continued to advance this specialism through positions at the Welsh School of Architecture as a researcher within the Centre for Research in the Built Environment and Elmhurst Energy as Operations Director where he helped develop some of Europe’s leading building energy certification and labelling systems.
In 2013 Gavin was appointed Director of Building Performance at the Building Research Establishment (BRE) where he was responsible for a portfolio of BRE’s globally leading services including: BREEAM and CEEQUAL the world’s foremost environmental assessment methods for the built environment, the SiteSmart construction efficiency suite, and BRE’s national housing and energy research activities.
Gavin has academic qualifications in architecture, environmental design and building energy performance and is a Chartered Building Engineer and Fellow of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers. Gavin is a member of the Building Regulations Advisory Committee (BRAC) for the UK Governments Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government.
